The company

EKO Stahl was founded in Eisenhüttenstadt in 1951 under the name of Hüttenwerk Hermann Matern as the most important metallurgical plant of the GDR. From 1963 on, it operated under the name of Eisenhüttenkombinat Ost and was the largest metallurgical combined plant of GDR with 12.000 employees. In addition to the blast furnaces and the steel plant, EKO has disposed of a state-of-the-art cold rolling mill for flat steel already before the political changes in the GDR.

In 1990, the company has renamed to EKO Stahl AG and sold to the Belgian steel industry and engineering group Cockerill-Sambre by the Trust company in 1994. The company under the name EKO Stahl GmbH has been modernised extensively with the help of public funds and got a hot rolling mill then.
